World’s largest transmission-connected battery storage network
A subsidiary of EDF Renewables has partnered with Wartsila to accelerate the UK’s transition to a battery energy storage enabled clean energy future.
Pivot Power, a new arm of EDF, has ordered a 100MW energy storage system that will be installed at two clean energy projects in Oxford and Kemsley.
The first 50MW battery will be installed at Cowley in Oxford for full operation before the end of the day whilst another 50MW will be deployed in Kent, Kemsley.
The projects are part of efforts by Pivot Power to own and operate 2GW of grid-scale energy storage capacity and EDF Group’s Electricity Storage Plan under which it aims to be the leader in Europe with 10GW of additional storage by 2035.
It also supports the EDF Electric Mobility Plan, to become the leading electric mobility company by 2022 in the UK, France, Italy and Belgium. Beyond this 2022 date, the Group’s goal is to provide power for 600,000 electric vehicles and 75,000 charging points.
The two projects mark the creation of the world-first national network of grid-scale batteries.
The projects will provide flexible capacity and reliability to support increased renewable energy generation and EV charging infrastructure. The UK market for EVs is expected to expand significantly in 2020 in what has been described as “the year of the electric car” by industry analysts.
