FERC accepts massive $3.6 billion energy storage project

The $3.6 billion pumped hydro energy storage project will be built near retired Navajo coal plant to provide renewable energy to consumers in Los Angeles, Vegas and Phoenix.

The gigantic battery will leverage water from Lake Powell and from a reservoir on a plateau as well as existing energy transmission infrastructure previously used by the retired coal plant, to deliver energy.

The facility will use cheap, abundant solar and wind energy to pump water to the upper reservoir, then release it through turbines to generate 10 hours of renewable energy each day.

Jim Day, the CEO of Daybreak Power, said: “Everyone knows we’re going to need massive amounts of storage to integrate high levels of renewables, and we need to do it smart and cost-effectively. The Navajo Energy Storage Station does that.
