iFLY Indoor Skydiving Set to Install 2 MWh of Green Charge Energy Storage
SANTA CLARA, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Green Charge, an ENGIE Company, today announced that iFLY Indoor Skydiving, the world’s largest indoor skydiving company, will install two megawatt hours of energy storage at its San Diego and Ontario facilities in southern California. The 500 kW/1000 KWh systems will be used to reduce demand charges by nearly $1.5 million dollars over the term of the contract. Each iFLY location has a 14-foot diameter wind tunnel powered by four clean-running electric motors. The sudden draw of power creates a perfect vortex for indoor skydiving but also creates extremely high demand charges. In Southern California, demand charges account for up to 50 percent of a commercial utility bill.
”It’s no surprise that energy is one of iFLY’s biggest expenditures, and a solution like Green Charge is an incredible benefit to our business,” said Todd Shallan, iFLY Indoor Skydiving COO. “The savings implications and scalability of this energy storage partner is exciting, and we’re looking forward to seeing its impact long-term.”
At iFLY people of all ages and abilities can experience the gift of flight in a safe, comfortable and fun environment. In addition to the indoor flight experience, iFLY places a special emphasis on educational programs. iFLY’s Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) program uses state-of-the-art vertical wind tunnel technology to inspire and educate students. Trained STEM educators guide students through an interactive presentation, demos in the wind tunnel, and lab activities for elementary, middle school, high school, and higher education students and educators.
“Green Charge, like iFLY, takes great pride in our operational experience, with a special emphasis on education,” said Vic Shao, CEO of Green Charge. “Our customer base includes more than 100 schools, and a large number are located in southern California, where demand charges are extremely high. The addition of energy storage helps significantly cut down iFLY’s utility costs.”
