Exelon’s Quad Cities-1 and -2 nuclear units at 95% at request of PJM

Exelon Generation’s 912-MW Quad Cities-1 and 994-MW Quad Cities-2 nuclear units in Cordova, Illinois, were both operating at 95% of capacity late Thursday morning after reducing output earlier that day, a company spokeswoman said.

Output was reduced at the units beginning about 1:30 am CDT (0630 GMT) Thursday in coordination with regional transmission operator PJM Interconnection because of “pricing signals and transmission line constraints,” Brandy Donaldson said in an email.

“We do not yet have an estimated time of when the units will be returned to 100% power,” Donaldson said.

Since 2015, Exelon has temporarily reduced off-peak output at one or more of its nuclear plants in Illinois numerous times because of grid constraints and what the company calls “pricing signals.” Exelon has previously said intermittent grid congestion has been occurring in the region around those plants …
