2 leaks fixed at Salem Twp. nuclear power plant
SALEM TWP. — Operators at Talen Energy’s Susquehanna nuclear power plant reconnected Unit 1 at the plant to the regional power grid Monday after fixing two leaks that shut down the unit for most of June.
Operators at the power plant planned a shutdown of Unit 1 to repair a small leak inside the containment structure that completely surrounds the reactor. They powered down the reactor on June 6.
During an inspection, power plant staff identified an unexpected second leak from a pipe beneath the reactor vessel. Staff reported that leak to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on June 8.
The unit is now delivering power to the regional grid.
Unit 2 remained fully operational during Unit 1’s outage.
