Breaking wind records in Texas
Wind power just set another record in Texas.
On Sunday night, wind farms in Texas generated a record output of 11,467 megawatts, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) said on Monday
Set in February, the previous wind generation output record in Texas was 11,154 MW.
Texas boasts more 15 gigawatts (GW) of installed wind power capacity, the highest installed wind power capacity of any state in the United States, according to the American Wind Energy Association.
The surge in wind power generation pushed real time prices in ERCOT below $0/MWh early on Monday morning as supply overwhelmed demand. ERCOT real-time prices averaged negative 64 cents/MWh from 1 am local time until about 5 am local time on Monday as wind generation averaged close to 9,500 MW across those hours.
