The PJM Interconnection’s annual capacity auction underway this week could result in natural gas-fired capacity exceeding 6 GW to make up for declining coal and nuclear supplies.
The largest U.S. power market’s grid operator supplies 61 million people in all or parts of Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. Results of this year’s capacity auction, set to be released on Aug. 21, would enable members to sell their generation or buy it for their customers for delivery three years in the future.
