Appalachian Power expects shortfall from PJM capacity performance rule
Appalachian Power expects to have a capacity shortfall because of PJM Interconnection’s capacity performance rule, the company said in an integrated resource plan it issued late last week.
The American Electric Power utility has resources through 2019 to meet internal demand, but in 2020, when the capacity rule takes full effect, the company expects a shortfall based on assumptions regarding the timing and parameters of the rule.
“From a capacity viewpoint, the 2020/2021 planning year is when PJM’s new capacity performance rule will take full effect, limiting capacity value of intermittent resources and thereby creating a need within APCo for additional capacity,” the company said.
