Lessons Learned: Grid Did Better This Winter
The winter of 2013-14 was a brutal wake-up call for electric utilities that paid off this year, the nation’s grid watchdog says.
The North American Electric Reliability Corp. says the grid performed well this winter thanks to lessons utilities learned from a year ago.

The North American Electric Reliability Corp. said the bulk power system remained reliable this winter, even though extreme weather led to record demand for power across the country.
“The widespread, record-breaking cold temperatures this winter were reminiscent of what we saw last year,” said Mark Lauby, senior vice president and chief reliability officer at NERC.
“However, the impact on the bulk power system was reduced as industry incorporated lessons learned from last year’s polar vortex event into this year’s winter preparations,” he said.
