A lot of coal plant deactivations ahead in PJM between now and June 1
With the initial compliance deadline under the federal Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS) coming up on April 16, PJM Interconnection has had to clear a lot of coal plant deactivations, with many of them timed around the initial deadline.
A March 12 state of the market report from Monitoring Analytics LLC, the independent market monitor for PJM, said that a total of 26,679.8 MW of capacity has been, or is planned to be, retired between 2011 and 2019, with all but 2,140.8 MW planned to be retired by the end of 2015. The AEP Zone accounts for 6,024.0 MW, or 22.6%, of all MW planned for retirement from 2015 through 2019.
