Nuclear Matters meets at Davis-Besse
Nuclear Matters hosted a panel at Davis-Besse on Thursday to discuss the importance of nuclear power and the challenges many plants across the country are dealing with.
Nuclear Matters is a group comprised of former high ranking government officials and nuclear power advocates. They are currently speaking across America to educate communities about nuclear power.
“Nuclear energy is a vital source of energy in Ohio and in the United States,” senior director of JobsOhio Dana Saucier said. “Many nuclear plants across the country are in danger of shutting down.”
Among the challenges nuclear plants face:
• Flat electricity usage due to a sluggish economy
• Rising nuclear operation costs
• Increase in the popularity of natural gas
• Aging electricity transmission systems
• Lack of carbon emission policy
These factors were key reasons for why two plants — the Kewaunee facility in Wisconsin and the Vermont Yankee nuclear power facility — recently closed.
